I have just placed massive quantities of tobacco in sterilized quart size mason jars, clean lids, clean insides, but is there anything else I need to do. Someone mentioned once heating them up to create a strong seal, but is that really necessary. Also do I need to wax the tops.
Capt. Bob, I know you have some tobacco in jars, what do you do?
That's what I did last Christmas with Heritage and Red Carpet, but I'll only know next Christmas (Yes Captain, the leads are still sealed) if I did it right. ;-)
The only thing I'll do different next time is _after_ loading the tobacco into the jars, I'll heat them a few minutes in hot water, must take care, no water can go inside the jar.
And then close the jar as usual. When the tobacco (and the air inside) returns to normal temperature the air inside will contract somewhat thus creating a low pressure differential, that will provide an even better seal as the lead is "pulled" from the inside.
Forget the wax, all our experts at MPC say that you can very easily ruin your tobacco. I wont even try it.
Same here Steve. I started jarring up my bulk 2 years ago this month and its worked like a charm.
:)
Pack the tobacco in a jar, spin the lid and ring down tight, and put it in the larder.
I simply screw the quart-wide-mouth lids on tight! Nothing else. I also use the small wide-mouth 4 ounce for daily smokes. It's tough to get your hand in the quart jars and you should not be opening them often letting fresh air in that will dry your tobacco. Therefore, I load the small jars for daily smokes from the large jars. It is easy to load the pipe from the small jars.
That is a very nice and cozy set up. Compliments!
sorry for the late reply. We lost power for the last day, seems there was a bit more snow then I thought.
Keep the jars out of the sun and in a cool, not cold, place. Tobacco kind of likes around 70 degrees farenheit. (It works well for the cigars)
Thankfully I save all of my jars--may it be for pickles, applesauce, etc. I really need to get into bulks...tinned is becoming way too expensive!
Who have suggested to just screw down the lids tight to seal the tobacco. I've stored tobacco for up to five years using this method and have had no problems.
Many clean wide mouth mason jars of different sizes and different baccy's in'em.
I just close the jars & be done with it. There really is no need for anything else. Leave the wife's wax alone!
