Hi there
I recently purchased a Peterson pipe tamper.
It's really pretty, and completely unlike my run-of -the-mill pipe tool that I usually use.
I do have one question, when using a tamper, should one clean the base of it, so as to avoid a carbon build-up, or does it not really matter?
I love the look of my new tamper, and would like to keep it clean, but it irritates me that i think i might have to go dusting it and such after every smoke.
Thanks in advance, and happy smoking!
Justin
I've always just used the El'Cheap'O pipe nail (99¢) because I have a tendency to lose things like that. I have a nice tamper that has a brass tip which I keep on a shelf at home (Where I almost never lose it.) but I always clean it after each smoke.
I would say that it is up to you. If you want it to stay nice then I would limit how much I used it and clean it after each smoke. But thats just my take on it.

I wipe mine off after every use just to keep my pockets clear of ashes. My use of a tamper is... as necessary. I don't use it unless needed but I alway carry one. Mine has a dull knife on it for clearing the bowl after every smoke.

Is it smooth or textured? I have one of those typical 3 in 1 pipe tools that is chrome plated. I just dust off the ash on my jeans, shirt, jacket, whatever. I don't really care. As a result, my jeans have some interesting black spots that could not be easily explained to non smoking family members I have yet to inform about my new hobby.
I've also made some tampers out of deer antler and spent bullet casings. You can forget about keeping those clean. The ash gets shoved into the grooves around the primer plate and the calibre stamp. They're pretty black now. My 1 year old son did me the favor of loosing the nicer of those two tampers so I try to keep better track of the other one. The deer antler tampers are cool but leave a lot to be desired when cleaning out the bowl.
The ones with the pressed on tips all have broken the tampers when dropped or been washed with the laundry. I have two fairly nice ones with screwed on tamps and wood scales, (poker and blade on all). One I carry on me and the other stays at the shrine. I wipe off anything that sticks. I only use the tamps when the bowl is lit because I like to pack by hand. Nails work fine and there are a couple of them scattered throughout the house. Never had touse the poker for clogs, only to loosen a lit tight pack. The dull blade has its place especially if I've lit something that tastes like garbage.
Shells I can't recall ever using and I don't know why, (must remember not to use loaded rounds, might get messy).
Enjoy

Always just a quick wipe on the shirt or pants. Much to SWAMBO's disgust - lol
Smoke what you want in what you like.
I have two deer antler tampers, gifted to me by a great guy on this forum. Use them all the time. There's something about natural materials that just does it for me. I use a pipe knife to clean the bowl out. Oh, & I pretty much scatter ash wherever I go.
