I decided to unlimber one of my own.
GLORY BE!! So much better than the majority of lighters.
Flame rises above the lighter and is drawn down into the pipe by suction. Less chance of charring the rim.
Inexpensive.
Reliable.
Repairable.
Great guarantee.
I've been using a couple of gooseneck butane lighters, which do a good job but run out of fluid far too soon. The Zippo has been trouble free and a lifesaver.
Thanks to all of you that helped place me on the straight and narrow.

I'm sorry, but I do not agree
Hey, for once I have to disagree with someone. :-)
When I smoked cigs I used a Zippo for years, but in the end I was back to Bic lighters.
Because:
Against
a) It is messy. After a while the oils from gasoline vapors and chips from the flint make some hard to remove goo inside the lighter;
b) Smell. I like the smell, but not on my briars. I heard that now there is a odor-less fluid, but I haven't tried it, so I don't have a opinion, this is based on the old gasoline fluid.
c) Reload. It is fun the 1st 10 times, than it starts to be a pain in the but. I refill my butane lighter in 10 seconds;
d) Safety. I want a lighter that goes out if I drop it from my hand in the car.
Pro
a) It will work in any weather, I agree, but that feature is not that important for most city pipe smokers, in the fields, well that's another story.
b) Most Zippo are beautiful, enough said.
c) The fire is cooler than butane, so less chance of charring (it will go black, anyway, but that will be residue, not charring).
My option is a cheap not pipe specific Ronson ligter
And for refill, a 250 mls tin will refill this baby for months, at a very low cost, zippo fluid is more expensive.
I'm expecting a useful life of about 1 year, while a zippo can live forever, but this costs about 10€ here, I think I can get one every year or so.
But Zippo is cooler... Hell yes!
Zippo's
I don't like them for pipes for the same reason I don't like them for cigars. They always impart a little fluid taste when lighting. Yes, indestructable and troublefree, but Bic's are cheap and there are about thirty of them in the house. Bics don't give me 'Zippo Rash' on my thigh either. For ciggies, who gives a rat's butt. They taste like crap anyhow, (just necessary at times).
I prefer refillable Butane...
... I see where C&D has $25 (C&D logo) Zippo lighters for sale on their site.
Personally, I use a refillable pipe lighter ($11.25) made in Austria. Has a flint (not electronic) but carries an extra flint inside for convenience. I also have a GEI refillable butane lighter with electronic ignition that works well, too.
Good Info
Eh thanks for the feedback on this topic.. I was curious if I was going about my new found love of pipe-tobacco and see that my choice in refillable butane with electronic ignition similar to what has been shown above in the pic, was an accecpted alturnative to having to order one of the zippo kind online as none are available locally. :)
I'm usingg...
... A Zipo pipe specific lighter with the black label fuel. No thigh rash as yet. Minimal fuel taste.
Zippo man here
I'll use any source that works, but a Zippo is always in my pocket.
At home, wooden matches of appropriate length.
Elsewhere, the Zippo (a Pennsylvania product, a bit of home pride, you know). I appreciate that it always lights and fuel taste does not last too long.
I tried Bics (and the American and Chinese knockoffs) and they just do not work well for me. As I smoke a number of fairly short (lengthwise) or stubby pipes I found myself blowing out the Bic as soon as I began the light. Flick, puff, flick, puff, flick, puff...dig in pocket for Zippo.
I've an outrageously costly Dupont which works very well lighting anything if one doesn't mind $6.50 for each fuel reload (but, hey, it's a $900 lighter, why should I complain?) I'm actually too embarrassed at the ostentatiousness of pulling the danged thing out in public, to tell the truth. I would use it at home but wife always remarks, "Didn't your FIRST wife give you that thing?" Yes, she did, and forgot to take it along with the sheets and the kitchen sink.
I am torn on this one.
I do love zippos, but I don't have the pipe adapter for it. Having just used the zippo with its regular adapter I think it works just fine. I find bic's, at least for me, have more of a taste because I end up sucking in fumes more then the fire as those d@mn things always go out.
For almost a year I used stick matches exclusively, but now I have an old boy lighter that I wouldn't go without.
torch lighter
I have a torch lighter but don't know who makes it. It is shaped to look like a glass of Guinness Draught. The capacity is rather small but who cares. I use it to light cigars and my beater pipes, not the nice ones. Sine I don't smoke cigs, that is not an issue. Minimal taste in the pipe, not noticable on cigars.
Lighters
I have a pipe zippo, but it has not been used since I purchased my Corona Old Boy, good reliable lighter & yes the new black can fluid imparts little to no taste.....
Sigh..
I have looked longingly at the Oldboys but they are out of my financial reach.
aristokles- $900 for a lighter! I can only imagine. Nice of her to leave it. An oversight for sure. Women are such great housekeepers, and car keepers, and bank account keepers.
Krawdad...
Do yourself a favor, start stashing for an Oldboy, believe me, you won't regret it. You can get the black matte model usually for under $100. It is the best lighter I have ever owned, and it didn't really break the bank.
And Triumph TR7 keepers, sort of...
she still is trying to get the lighter. I told her I'd trade it for my sports car. She didn't keep that, however...looney wench. No concept of value, car wouldn't fit in safe deposit box.
I love my zippo
I have a number of others, and currently have my eye on a dunhill lighter, but my zippo is my favourite.
I don't really get the fuel taste, with zippo's new fuel formula, and it is such a pleasure to use.
I also like it because it doesn't promote charring of the rim of the pipe, so it's good all round.
Ciao!

The virtues of Zippos
I have a number of lighters -- each of which has its virtues. Nothing beats a Zippo outdoors, IMO, and they're cheap enough that you don't have to worry too much about losing it.
For a throwaway, I like the DJeeps, they're flame adjustable and their capacity keeps them working for a while. Supposedly they're also refillable, but at two bucks, who cares?
I bought a Zippo back when I
I bought a Zippo back when I started with a pipe, and it has rarely been more than an arms reach away ever since. Today I have several Zippo's, but I also have an old beater of a Dunhill Rollgas lighter that I use often.
The Zippo is perfect for me, because it's so damned easy to maintain. Butane valves are a lot more sensitive to buildup. My Zippo will flame up with just about any amount of crud on it.
As far as the smell goes, I always let the flame settle down for a few seconds. After that it's smooth sailing.
I have an oldboy
It's crap for outside though, so I tend to use a bic. Besides I travel alot and I'm always afraid some ill-informed trogledyte airport security person is going to confiscate it. (Much like my darts got confiscated last week. Forgot to put them in my damn check-bag and didn't have time to send them before my connecting flight... grr.
