So, this might be more significant for the "older" smokers out there, but all are welcome to comment. We all know that over the years, blends have come and gone. Some have stayed longer than others, some have left and returned only to be pulled from our grubby hands yet again.
So, of all the blends you can think of, which discontinued blend do you miss the most and why?
For me, its Dunhill Early Morning Pipe. Though the rumor mill says it is returning, I have an old tin that was gifted to me, and about 2 small jars of bulk that I have been saving for special times. I really don't want to dip into either until I know that it is going to come back for sure.
My why is simply because it is a classic, that many said had changed when shifting blenders, but I always found it to be a smooth, delicate smoke, that truly was perfect for the first puff of the day.
But I would also add Edgeworth Ready Rubbed. (I never did get to try the slices.)
and Bell's Three Nuns, Field and Stream, the old Royal Yacht.
965 here too. I've substituted McClelland AM Pipe for EMP - & for that matter both C&D & GLP make apparently very good substitutes. I still have almost a pound of 965 in the cellar. I'll get to it come winter.
When they moved out of Ca. years ago I kinda dropped off the pipe map. I used to go there every payday and pick up a tin and then to BevMo for two cigars.
Ashton 'Original Oldchurch' and "Old Dog'.
Let me add, when I got serious about the pipes last year I found Nording 'Retreiver', (blended by McClelland). I have a black Lab and had to try it. It has become one of my most favorite Aro's. Sadly I soon found it too has been discontinued. There's a pound and a half in containers and eleven unopened 50gm tins in the cubby. Milan's has fairly closely reproduced it in 'Buddy's Blend'.
Hi, Sparks. I miss Larsen's blend's #50 and #80. I smoked them for years. I sure wish they would import them again.
...Milan Tobacco has a substitute called "My London Dock". It is pretty good but I would not call it a mirror image by any means.
I don't really miss any blends at this point in time, probably because I'm not really one of the old timers :)
IF ... for some reason .. I'M NOT SAYING IT'S EVER GONNA HAPPEN ... but IF ... OGS suddenly went away, I would miss it for about two hours and move on to Mac Baren Navy Flake :)
and I don't really miss any blend in particular, because I don't have a great deal of attachment to them, but I miss how easy it was to buy tobacco. Even a few years ago, all of it was easier to find. Now it is kept hidden away in dark places of stores. Besides that you can't smoke anywhere anymore.
I have been lucky to stash away a great number of blends, but I imagine the stock pipe will soon run out, and then I will be out of luck. But I am now up to 13 pounds of stashed tobacco, and at a 1/4 pound a month, that will give me a couple years before any real grief comes along
I have three unopened pouches of London Dock here. They whisper to me, "Smoke us, smoke us", but I resist the temptation.
All in all I miss the Dunhills. Back when I began smoking my pipes (1965), My Mixture #965 was actually considered more a beginners blend. But I miss it as well as Royal Yacht. I have found no substitutes.
And Sail Green - Aromatic back when it was a narrow ribbon cut blend, fully aromatic with no discernible Latakia (that I could detect). This current stuff is totally different bearing no resemblance to old product beyond the label.
While I am not an old time smoker or versed in tobacco for that matter .... I am from the east coast but do live in the midwest ... and one of myfavorite places in the world is "With Pipe And Book" .... was last last there in July whaen they were on part time..... It's still awesome ..... Books, Lake Placid, Smells just like My Granndfather house when I was kid a long time ago---- there is nothing wrong with all that and is the sole fealing i look for when I'm smoking my pipe which I love......... I will miss them when I am back in Placid... rumor has it that cup o joes has their blends for sale.....

I love the choices we have today however I still would like to see all the old stuff on the shelves. The ones I always had on hand were the original Three Nuns, BS 759 and John Cotton's Mellow Virginia.

When I was young and just out of High School I remember my grandfather gifting me some of his SWR as I was heading off to school. I know it is still available, but it's not the same.
Once I was in school I fell in love with Rum & Maple, but alas it has also gone on the wayside.
I finally figured it out though. I have never lived a respectable distance to a local tobacconist and until the internet became available, I was a "drug store" blend buyer because I was comfortable doing it that way. Now I sample and enjoy some of the best tobaccos because I have the whole world at my fingertips. It has also brought me in contact with some of the finest pipe smokers around to share and learn with, which includes everyone here on MPC.
Since I have only been smoking pipes for not quite a year, I haven't got any tobaccos I miss. But there are some other things I miss.
Jimmy Stewart, parachute pants, eating ice cream at Lic's in Northport, CBGB's in NYC, and size 8 jeans.
One of those things is coming back. You guess which one. (Hint: South Beach Diet)
All of the Murray's blends - especially Royal Yacht, 965, Nightcap etc. Also: Real Erinmore Flake and Mixture, Murray's Irish Slices (an Excellent Flake!), Sinclair's Highland Sliced, Irish Plugs (Mic McQuaid, Warrior, Erinmore, Yachtsman, Velvan), Galaher's Irish Cake. Oh the good old days...
It looks that you, long time pipers had all the fun... 8-)
But what's the general feeling ? Actual blends are _worst_ than the blends of old or just different ?
I agree. For me it was 965, Standard Mixture Medium, London, Aperitif and Elizabethan. The quality was always top of the line.
FWIW, C&D's new Buffalo Soldier and Tuskegee Airman has filled that 5 year void for me.
what i miss most is being able to just go into an establishment and find the blend/brand you want--(i smoke mostly OTC)-today it seems that option is a thing of the past--
I recently tried to find OTC's to send to friends in the States (I'm in South Africa). The only place I could find them was at a B&M. Pipe tobacco is getting crowded out - it is simply no longer stocked by supermarkets & other stores. Only the specialist B&M's have it these days.
Amphora Original Brown! I smoked it for 20 years before they quit importing it to the US. I miss it a lot, to me it was my all day smoke.
I have tried some match blends like McCranie's 9 to 5 and C&D 965 nothing quite matches the old standard, close but no cigar.
I used to smoke this exclusively in the winter months. Alas no more.
