I really enjoy smoking and drinking, especially in combination with each other. I do not really drink for the intoxication, more so the taste. I smoke cigars and a pipe, and i am fairly new to both, what could be recommended to go with either (as the title says) a port wine or a good single malt scotch, from the highland region if that makes a difference on recomendation. oh and sorry for any atrosious spelling as i have been drinking aformentioned port wine for a while now tonight. thank you and i look forwad to any response.
a good maduro cigar, or a nice English blend. The intense flavors compliment each other. Now, if you are going to mix your scotch, say with boiling water, butter and sugar then a lighter tobacco blend may be in order. I smoke a blend called Gentleman Jack that is made at our local B&M and it is simply heavenly. It tastes great and is a wonderful crowd pleaser.
For port wine, well I am not sure. I've never had port wine.
I like your screen name. I listen to a lot of old time radio shows and they played the commercials for that brand of cigarette quite frequently at that time.
My choice would be a dizzy blond! YMMV!
scotch is gross, I don't know how you guys drink that stuff
For the port wine I'd try a VA/per. I think that the Scotch is screaming Lataaaaaaaaaaaakia... If the scotch is really good then something balkan but with little to no latakia, I could think in Presbytarian mixture, but you need a touch of sweet and Presby don't have it, maybe Peterson Old Dublin.
Kurt, a blond is champagne, with scotch it's a mess, and a waste of perfectly good scotch.
I really try not to toot my own horn, too much. But, I do drink Ruby Port with Captain Bob's Blend. CBB is a light English aromatic with a grape flavor that goes well with Port or Grape flavored Vodka.

Good, more for me. I was about thirty when I discovered the nectar of the gods. There are only two things wrong with it, my wife enjoys, but rarely buys it and we always seem to keep running out. Reminds me, need to go to Costco and pick up another alcoholic sized bottle of Jack.
It's easy to drink, tip the glass and gravity will take care of the rest.
to find a group of people whom are like minded and actually respond to posts. i have been members of other simular forums and rarely got responses, im glad people here also remember that they at one time were a total novice. thanks for the info and i look forward to trying each of them over time please keep em coming.
and scotch is amazing so long as it isnt something like jonnie walker red or black label... i have been drinking arborlour single malt twelve year, its aged in both an oak cask and then in a sherry cask which seems to give almost a fruity/spicey taste, either a couple ice cubes thrown in or just splash of water really brings out some nice flavors, i recomend giving it a taste if your into to scotch, and even if your not you may be surprised.
Try english or balkans w/ the scotch and VaPers (St. James Woods, St James Flake, etc) with the port.
And, having been in portugal and drinking port by the ocean in the night breeze, I've gotta recommend Virginia Flakes (Like Orlik Golden Sliced), because that's what I did and it put me into a sublime state of relaxation.
Haha, I guess that comment is only funny if you look at my MPC handle........I love scotch, my favorites being craganmore and lagavulin. There's rarely a day goes by that I dont enjoy "the nectar of the gods" especially in winter. During the summer I often enjoy a glass of famous grouse and soda with breakfast (thanks for the tip Mr. Churchill)
As for pairings, I prefer a good strong english blend with my scotch. Peretti's century is delicious and mirrors the briny smokiness in the Islay single malts.
Cheers,
Pat
Let's keep it a secret, the prices don't seem to be going down. While a bit light, one of my reasons for loving Glenmorangie is the smokiness of the aroma. Speyburn if I'm broke, but have to have a fix, (it only runs about twenty bucks a fifth here). Hmmm, too bad it's only 0900 in the morning and five hours before work...
I like the idea of a Virginia (FVF?) with a single malt: a heavy Lat blend might (IMHO) be too much "peat" in the mix, if that makes sense -- I don't want to obscure the flavors of the Scotch. Conversely, a heavy Latakia blend (Da Vinci?) goes quite well with a good Bourbon (e.g. Maker's Mark).
Tim: Sounds like you know your beverages. I've done it with Jim Beam. The problem with "it goes good with" is drinking as often as smoking can get a man into a whole heap of problems. Too much of a good thing....you know. You must be bored at work today.
Also gave us for Gin Martini's, "pour the gin, drop the olive and wave the cap from the vermouth bottle over the glass". My personal favorite; four parts Bombay Sapphire, one part vermouth and two olives, (my fav's are garlic stuffed, bleu cheese are okay if you're being friendly and are sharing with THOSE kind (her kind)), of people. REPEAT AS NECESSARY! Light english or whatever for happy martini's
Peaty like Balvenie, I can use a heavy english. 5110, Larry's Blend and Coyote Classic are probably my heaviest. Glenmorangie is fairly delicate, so I don't want to disturb the flavor. SL and FMOTT work well with it. Oh hell, if I'm drinking that, ( it is THE"Nectar of the Gods" to me), all bets are off.
I smoke alot of aromatic's, Jack goes better with them unless I'm getting serious about the tobacco.
Sorry Pat, it was a negative SCOTCH comment and I posted before I looked and thought, (not the first time I've done that here). I'll try to be more careful, but NO promises, my thanks :-O!
Bob
I was turned on to Port only a few months ago, but I've really been enjoying it with a nice bowl.
I find that Haddo's Delight goes great with a Tawny Port. I just tried Glen Piper with a Ruby Port the other day and these paired up great. The light aromatic of dried fruit from the Glen Piper fit right in with sweet fruitiness of the Ruby Port. A nice Virginia like FVF or Union Square will also go splendidly with some Port.
I find that a nice light to medium English goes great with The Glenlivet. I usually pair it with Squadron Leader or C&D Good Morning. I found that Irish Flake works great, too. Although I usually like to have this with some Jameson. I had some Bob's Chocolate flake with The Glenlivet the other night and it was another great combo.
The tonquin in 1792 Flake goes great with a nice Bourbon like Maker's Mark on the rocks. The tonquin works really well to bring out the vanilla notes in a good Bourbon. Eagle Rare, single barrel Bourbon also goes great with the 1792. Dark Flake unscented works well with Bourbon, too.
I find that C&D Crowley's Best works equally well with Scotch or Bourbon.
Sorry to offend any single malt junkies, but I love JW Black. I'll even drink it with some club soda on a hot summer's night. If I recall correctly, Sir Winston Churchill was said to start his day with a JW Black & Soda Highball. I don't recall any mention of Grouse. Although I've been known to enjoy Grouse as well, and god forbid, even Cutty Sark. :)
Cheers,
Brian
I'm gonna have to go with ya here Brian... I am a JW Black man myself... well, I'm a white man that likes JW Black... just wanted to be clear about that, lol.
When I am out, it's JW Black and Soda for me. It's my drink and my bartenders usually have it sitting for me on the bar when I walk in.
Wow Sparks, I don't know if I could survive w/ just one drink, although having a signature drink has a certain kind of panache -
I tend to change my drinks based on the season really, GnT in the summer (Prefer Bombay Sapphire) Scotch (Usually Talisker) in the winter. Some other perennial summer favorites are Mojito and Margarita (The real kind with Lime, Orange liquor and tequila - not this sugary sweet mix shit you get at most places - bleh) and some fall winter flavors are white russians or irish coffees (Just black coffee and whiskey please, no cream or baileys.)
It took several years for me to settle into the "one drink" situation. I will occasionally drink a good brew in the summer, but I would say about 99% of the time when we go out to our regular haunts... its JWB and Soda. There is just something cool about having your drink waiting for you on the bar when you walk in. All I need now is for the bar to yell "NOOOORRRRRRMMMM" and it will be complete, lol.
Some classics for you Cheers fans out there:

Lagavulin and Ardbeg top my list for scotch although I have had and enjoyed many. Lagavulin, Ardbeg, Talisker and Laphoiag are like the Latakia's and Balvenie, Cragganmore and McCallan are like the Va's. Knob Creek seems to be the bourbon I favor although there are many I won't turn down. I just bought a bottle of Russell's Reserve Bourbon and a Bottle of Russell's Rye. Both are delicious.
As far as port goes I can't help you, you will have to tell me what would be a good one.
Oh, you mean type or something. Let's not forget a premium tequila, Patron usually resides, but is absent for the holidays. Great with English or VaPer.
I've tried my share of scotch's and settled on the two with an occasional foray to Balvenie. My birthday in June gets me a premium Glenmoragie, (I get it for ME!). There are as many brands and types of scotch as there are freakin' pipe tobacco! I've tried way more scotch's than I have tobaccos.
Let's not forget COGNAC! Hennessy prevails in this house, (because I'm the one who buys it, VSOP or XO usually).
Damn, here I sit with a freshly opened oilcan and the courts early in the morning...
regarding pairing with port. After all, Portugal is the port capital of the world. Although, I think that we can give your port I serious go for the money, Vasco!
And did I hear correctly: Jim Beam and Jack Daniels seen as Scotch? Blugh! :)
one thing to say, Ardbeg 10 year old with samuel gawiths navy flake.
None better than that for me.Dont drink port so sorry i cant help there. There is a new ardbeg out called Supernova at 58.9% but at £95 a bottle i shall have to stick with the 10 year old for now lol
Regards
I don't drink alot of port, however Scotch... Glemorangie or Speyburn, English, Vaper or Wall Street, (as the about the only aro'), heck, Dark Star will do nicely anytime also. IMHO nothing goes better with bubbly than FMOTT, period, hands down.
I take no honor in being wrong, I am what I am...Bob/Popeye circa1959
